Immigration in Europe : policies and realities

Source 1 : Regulations of the European Parliament and the Council on the rules governing the movement of persons across borders (Schengen Borders Code)

"Internal Borders
Any person may cross the internal borders at any crossing-point without checks being carried out
External Borders
Non EU-country nationals are subject to check. These comprise a verification of the conditions governing entry, including verification in Visa Information System. For stays not exceeding three monts per a six-month period, a non-Eu country national must possess a valid travel document, a valid visa, justify the purpose of his stay and have sufficient means of subsistence, not have an alert issued for him in the Schengen Information Sytem. If these conditions are not met, entry to the territory is refused, unless special provisions apply (for humanitarian reasons)."

Source 3: Frontex Annual Risk Analysis 2013

"Detections of illegal border-crossing along the E-U's external borders dropped to 73000 in 2012 half the number reported in 2011. That was the first time the annual detections plunged under 100000. In 2012, Afghans remained the most detected nationality. Syrians stand out. Most of them apply for asylum. Detections of illegal stayers totalled about 350000 in 2012 but it's declining since 2008. The risks associated with cross-border criminality are moderate (trafficking in human-beings, terrorism, illicit drugs)."
